During my high school days I used to travel every day by bicycle since the school was approximately 6km from my home. It’s fun cycling around, but not all the time; sometimes it’s tiresome and exhausting. I had a lovely friend who was two rounds stouter than me and used to pedal me all the way up to school and also back. He would do that every time I felt weak or lazy. I still remember how he used to sweat when he pedaled the bicycle, with me sitting comfortably. Though it was not a warming sight to see him like that with me knowing that I was an extra burden to him, I enjoyed that comfortable journey. I never hesitated to ask him again because I knew he loved me and understood my weakness. A selfless love alone can carry others’ burdens. If we look around, we can see many such people in our lives.
As human beings we have different kinds of burdens in our lives. Some were shared by the people who love us and care for us, just like the friend I mentioned, but not all the burdens in life can be shared. One such burden is the burden of sin. Many of us from all walks of life suffer from this immense burden of our past mistakes and the unjustifiable things that we once did that keep on haunting us, taking away our peace and joy altogether. This is not a burden that can be shared with friends and family but only with someone who loves us more than they do. The Bible says in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus is the Son of God, who came into this world to deliver you and me from the burden of sin, He took the cross for us, giving us peace and joy that we had lost because of our mistakes, and He doesn’t want us to carry that burden again.
The Bible says in Isaiah 53:5: “But He (Jesus) was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed”. Yes, the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, so there is no need for us to find that peace anywhere else because He alone is able to forgive us and deliver us from the burden of our sin. The only thing He wants us to do is to accept Him and believe that He is able to take all our sins away. Jesus said in Matthew 11: 28- 30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” This is a promise from a God who loves us so much, someone who understands our weaknesses and who wants us to live without the burden of sin.
Are we ready to share our burden with Jesus and receive the peace and joy He gives us? It doesn’t matter how huge our burden is, He is ready to carry it. And do you know what He calls us? FRIENDS!!! “Cast your burden on the LORD and He shall sustain you” (Psalm 55:22).
