A month back, an incident that took place in India shocked the media and the authorities. It’s the death of a 13 year old, inside the residential quarters of the Indian army. The boy was found to be the son of a local resident of the nearby slum and the postmortem report said he was shot in the body before he died. Investigations couldn’t crack down the case easily, until the murderer, a retired army officer confessed the crime himself. What was so surprising and disheartening is the reason the convict gave for the ruthless murder.
“The boy tried to pluck berries from the backyard. Since my warnings failed to stop him, I shot him!!!” The price of a life has become so cheap nowadays that you can read about a murder or two in the news every single day. The above incident gives a clear picture that the world is becoming darker day by day as human soul is losing its shine gradually. Love, compassion, integrity, sacrifice, forgiveness and commitment have merely become words to fill the dictionary. We are desperately in need of a light, a light which can penetrate our human minds and illuminate the darkness present within.
Lack of education and illiteracy can no longer be pointed out as a reason for human insanity as it was the so called “educated”, who are responsible for many atrocities we come across. The darkness present inside humans in the form of extreme anger, selfishness, lust and all other impurities can never be eradicated by a system called education, it can throw light on few areas of life but it can never become “The Light” which gives life.
The Bible says in John 1:9, “That was the true light which gives light to every man coming into this world” and in John 3:19-21, “Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” The Bible clarifies further in John 1:3-5, “All things were made through Him and without Him nothing was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it.” Who is that true light that can take away the darkness present in the world and in us?
Jesus Christ says in John 8:12, “I am the light of this world .He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Yes He is the true light and in Him there is no darkness. What did Jesus do to root out the darkness present in us? He gave His life to offer forgiveness for our sins so that we would be made righteous through Him in this unrighteous and loveless world. A candle can never give light without melting itself. In the same way God sacrificed His own son Jesus Christ to be a light unto this world through whom we have life.
It’s not going to be easy to live a life of sanity in this dark world unless we have the true light shining bright within us. When He comes in to our lives, there is peace, joy and hope to live amidst this dark world filled with confusions and chaos. Love and forgiveness will never be the hardest thing anymore when He is with us, so is everything that we are lacking. Shall we ask Jesus to be the light of our life? He knows our weakness and our darkness. He will surely grant us the grace to be a light in this world, as He is the only hope amidst the hopeless circumstances around us.
